THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN THE RIGHT ROOMS
You’re not bad at networking. You may just be in the wrong room. Have you ever left a networking event wondering why you went? You showed up. You introduced yourself. You asked questions. You exchanged contact information.
The conversations may have been pleasant, but you still left without feeling connected to anyone. Maybe you have tried more events, more groups, more one-to-one meetings, or more consistent follow-up. You are doing what you have been told to do, yet the relationships are not developing in the way you hoped. It can leave you wondering:
- Am I doing something wrong?
- Should this feel easier?
- Is all this time leading anywhere?
The problem may not be your confidence, your personality, or your ability to connect. You may be spending time with people who aren't aligned with your business, in rooms that don't support the way you naturally build trust.
Why THE RIGHT people in the right room?
The Right People in the Right Rooms was created to help you pause and look at your networking experience differently. Not by telling you to attend more events.
Not by giving you another networking script. By helping you notice what is already happening in your relationships. Inside the field guide, you will explore:
- How you feel in the rooms you currently enter
- Whether you are building relationships or collecting contacts
- The people who already know, understand, and trust you
- The difference between networking activity and relationship intention
- What makes a professional relationship feel aligned
- How clients, referral partners, collaborators, and advocates can each play a different role
- Why some relationships grow naturally while others continue mostly from obligation
- How small, consistent moments build trust over time
This is not about judging the choices you have made. Every room and every relationship has given you information.
MAYBE Recognize Yourself Here
- You know relationships are important, but you are unsure which ones deserve more attention.
- You attend networking activities because you feel like you should.
- You have met many people, but few of those introductions have developed into meaningful relationships.
- You want to build trust without feeling as though you are always selling something.
- You care about people, but you do not have time to stay connected with everyone.
- You want stronger client and referral relationships without making networking a full-time job.
- You would like your relationship-building efforts to feel more intentional, natural, and valuable. If any of that feels familiar, this field guide is for you.
BUSINESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT PEOPLE
- The people who shape our businesses are not always the people we expected to meet.
- They may become clients, referral partners, collaborators, mentors, advocates, or trusted friends.
- Some relationships begin with one meaningful conversation.
- Others grow through small moments over months or years.
- The purpose of this field guide is not to tell you which relationships you should pursue.
- It is to help you become more aware of the people who are already around you, the relationships that feel aligned, and the rooms where trust has an opportunity to grow.
WHY THIS FIELD GUIDE WAS CREATED?
After more than twenty years in business development, sales, coaching, and community building, Angela Obert has experienced networking from many different perspectives. She has walked into rooms wondering whether she belonged. She has tried to make conversations become something they were not. She has invested time in relationships that never naturally developed.
She has also experienced what happens when the right people meet in the right environment and keep the conversation going. Those experiences shaped her belief that professionals do not always need more networking.
Sometimes they need space to explore what they have already experienced and decide what they want to do differently. The Right People in the Right Rooms is an educational resource created by Angela Obert for NIA Connection Academy.
IT BEGINS WITH AWARENESS
You do not need to make an immediate decision about every room or relationship. Begin by noticing.
- Notice where you feel like yourself.
- Notice who makes you curious.
- Notice where trust is already growing.
- Notice which relationships deserve one more conversation.
Become a member of a curated, relationship-first networking community with a built-in structure for trust, connection, and referrals — led by someone who actively facilitates agendas and integrates members into the group.
